The Process

  1. Check you can become a driving instructor

    Must be over 21, hold a UK manual licence for at least 3 years, have fewer than 6 points, and meet DVSA conduct standards. Start here: GOV.UK eligibility check.

  2. Get your ADI DBS (criminal record) check

    Apply online via GOV.UK and verify ID at a Post Office branch. The in-branch ID-check service costs £8.22. More info: GOV.UK DBS check.

  3. Pass ADI Part 1 – Theory & Hazard Perception

    Unlimited attempts. Test fee: £81. Learn more: GOV.UK ADI Part 1.

  4. Pass ADI Part 2 – Driving Ability

    You only get 3 attempts. Fee: £111. Learn more: GOV.UK ADI Part 2.

  5. (Optional) Get a 6-month trainee instructor licence

    Gain real teaching experience before Part 3. Application fee: £140. Details: GOV.UK trainee licence.

  6. Pass ADI Part 3 – Instructional Ability

  7. Register as an Approved Driving Instructor

    After passing Part 3, register with DVSA and display your ADI certificate before charging for lessons. Registration fee: £300. More info: GOV.UK ADI fees.
